Violent Clash in Zamfara Results in Over 100 Fatalities
A recent confrontation near Cida village in the Shinkafi Local Government Area of Zamfara has turned deadly, with reports indicating that more than 100 individuals lost their lives. The clash involved foot soldiers aligned with the infamous bandit leader Bello Turji and members of the Zamfara Civilian Protection Guard (CPG).
Background of the Conflict
According to local resident Sa’idu Garba, the CPG, with support from the Borno State Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF), initiated an assault on Turji’s camp. The operation aimed to capture the bandit leader, either dead or alive. The mission was reportedly spearheaded by a former bandit, Bashari Meniyo, who had changed sides.
Garba noted, “They mobilized themselves under the leadership of Bashari Meniyo and headed directly to Turji’s camp without informing the security forces.” However, Turji was tipped off about the impending attack and swiftly gathered a force of over 1,000 men to prepare for the confrontation.
Details of the Clash
The ensuing gun battle unfolded over several hours, with both sides exchanging heavy fire. Garba described the situation, stating, “There was a significant fight between the two groups, lasting for hours without any intervention from security agents.” The chaos resulted in the deaths of more than 100 of Turji’s affiliates, although the bandit leader himself managed to escape.
In addition, Garba reported the loss of over 20 members of the CPG, including Bashari Meniyo. He remarked, “Bashari Meniyo, who led the CPG members, was killed along with others in his group.” Garba further expressed that if security forces had intervened during the battle, Turji might have been captured or killed.
Community Impact
The clash sent shockwaves through the nearby village, with residents fleeing in fear. Mohammed Sani, another local, recounted his experience during the turmoil. “I heard several gunshots as the two groups exchanged fire on Monday. Most people in my village left their homes and ran for their lives to avoid being caught in the crossfire,” he shared.
Official Responses
Efforts to obtain a statement from military spokesperson Lt. Col. Suleiman Omale were unsuccessful, as he could not be reached due to his phone being switched off and no responses to text messages.
Meanwhile, Mustafa Kaura, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Communications, acknowledged the incident but refrained from providing specific casualty figures. He stated, “I need to find out the actual number of Civilian Protection Guard members reported to have lost their lives. I cannot comment further until after the investigation.”
Conclusion
The tragic events in Zamfara underscore the ongoing violence and instability in the region, primarily fueled by clashes between bandit groups and local security forces. With the community reeling from the aftermath and a call for thorough investigations, the hope remains that effective measures will be taken to restore peace and security in the area. The loss of life, both among the bandits and the civilian protection group, highlights the urgent need for a concerted effort to address the underlying issues driving such violent confrontations.
