Transforming Sokoto: Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s Vision for Development
Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto has initiated a transformative agenda aimed at reshaping the governance landscape of Sokoto State, with a strong emphasis on public infrastructure development. His administration’s dedication to infrastructure, part of a comprehensive 9-Point Smart Agenda, has significantly revitalized the physical and social fabric of the state, instilling renewed hope among its residents. This shift is particularly notable when contrasted with the period from 2015 to 2023, which many locals describe as a time of stagnation and missed opportunities for growth.
A New Era of Development
The people of Sokoto have expressed their enthusiasm for the changes implemented since Governor Aliyu took office on May 29, 2023. They view his leadership as a response to their long-standing calls for improvement in various sectors, particularly infrastructure. The governor is seen as a beacon of hope, demonstrating that change is possible. His infrastructure agenda is a cornerstone of his governance strategy, with the objective of transforming Sokoto into a modern and developed state.
The ongoing efforts encompass various initiatives, including road construction, water supply enhancements, housing projects, and rural development. Each initiative is designed to tackle persistent challenges and elevate the quality of life for residents across the state.
Road Infrastructure Overhaul
One of the most visible aspects of Governor Aliyu’s infrastructure initiative is his aggressive road construction and rehabilitation program, which commenced immediately after he assumed office. Acknowledging the previously neglected state of roads in Sokoto, particularly in urban and rural areas, Aliyu prioritized these improvements. His administration has taken decisive action to address the issue of poor road infrastructure, which had long been a source of frustration for residents.
In January 2024, Governor Aliyu launched the construction and rehabilitation of 47 roads connecting the Tudun Wada and Unguwar Rogo areas within the Sokoto metropolis, with an investment of ₦8.99 billion. These projects aim to alleviate traffic congestion and expand development opportunities within the state capital. Additionally, his government has undertaken the construction of over 30 asphalt roads as part of an Urban Renewal Programme, giving Sokoto a more modern and appealing appearance. The installation of safety features, such as wire fences along main roads, has further enhanced safety for both motorists and pedestrians.
Enhancing Rural Connectivity
Recognizing that a significant portion of Sokoto’s population resides in rural areas, the Aliyu administration has also focused on improving rural road connectivity. Key rural routes, including the Huchi-Gidan Kamba-Lugu junction and Wurno-Kwargaba-Sabongari roads, have been rehabilitated to facilitate the movement of goods and services. In total, approximately 101.65 kilometers of rural feeder roads have been constructed or rehabilitated across the state. Notable projects include the 3.6-kilometer Tangaza-Zabarmawar Yahaya Town road and the 4-kilometer Dingyadi-Rumbuki road in the Bodinga Local Government Area. These improvements have not only enhanced market access but have also boosted agricultural productivity and fostered social interactions within rural communities.
Addressing Water Scarcity
Governor Aliyu is equally committed to resolving the chronic water shortages that have plagued Sokoto residents. Historically, many have relied on expensive and often unsafe water sources. Aliyu’s administration is tackling this issue head-on with a ₦14.1 billion water project aimed at reviving and completing six township water schemes that had been neglected in the past. These schemes, once initiated by former Governor Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, are now being revitalized, with a combined capacity of 40 million gallons of water per day.
On June 23, Aliyu inaugurated the Old Airport Water Scheme, which is expected to provide three million gallons of water daily, marking a significant milestone in his efforts to eradicate water scarcity in the state. During the commissioning ceremony, the governor stated that his administration inherited a collapsed water supply system characterized by outdated equipment and a lack of essential treatment chemicals. To rectify this, his government has replaced obsolete equipment and secured alternative power sources for the state water board, ensuring a consistent supply of clean water for Sokoto and its surrounding areas.
Inclusive Development Strategies
Governor Aliyu has strategically located water projects based on population density and urgency of need, ensuring that both urban and rural communities benefit from improved access to potable water. This initiative has significantly reduced water costs for residents, who previously paid exorbitant prices for water access. The advancements in water supply have also contributed to better public health outcomes, addressing critical health challenges such as diarrhea and enteric diseases.
A Bright Future for Sokoto
In less than two years, Governor Aliyu’s administration has successfully delivered over 180 impactful projects, earning widespread acclaim from residents and stakeholders. His focus on both urban and rural development has effectively bridged the gap between the state capital and its surrounding areas, fostering economic growth, social equity, and security. As Sokoto strives to reclaim its historical prominence, the vision laid out by Governor Aliyu signifies a turning point in the state’s trajectory toward progress and development.
This ambitious agenda not only seeks to improve infrastructure but also aims to restore Sokoto’s status as a leading state in Nigeria, reminiscent of its golden era under the leadership of the late Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto. The future looks promising as the state embarks on a journey of transformation and renewal.
