Ogun State Governor Announces Major Investment in Polytechnic Infrastructure
On a significant day for the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic in Abeokuta, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun revealed a substantial investment aimed at revitalizing the institution. During the 15th combined convocation ceremony, which recognized graduates from nine academic sessions spanning from 2016 to 2024, the governor announced an intervention fund of N2 billion dedicated to various infrastructural improvements at the state-owned polytechnic.
Financial Incentives for Graduates
In addition to the infrastructure funding, Governor Abiodun introduced a cash reward of N2.5 million for the best graduating student from each academic session, covering the years from 2015/2016 to 2023/2024. This initiative is aimed at encouraging academic excellence and recognizing the hard work of outstanding students.
Reflecting on Institutional Challenges
Governor Abiodun expressed his concerns regarding the challenges faced by the polytechnic in recent years. He lamented the decision made by former Governor Ibikunle Amosun to relocate the institution to Ipokia, which resulted in a name change and ultimately led to a significant decline in student enrollment. The polytechnic, which once boasted a vibrant student body of around 30,000, saw its numbers plummet to just 5,000 due to this policy.
The governor emphasized that reinstating the institution’s former glory was one of the early challenges his administration encountered. He took pride in the progress made, noting that the student enrollment has since increased to approximately 13,000. This turnaround was attributed to dedicated efforts, including multiple visits to the National Board for Technical Education and the establishment of a fact-finding committee to address the institution’s issues.
Planned Infrastructure Projects
During his address, Governor Abiodun unveiled several planned projects aimed at enhancing the polytechnic’s facilities:
- Construction of a 500-seater ultramodern lecture theatre
- Development of new roads leading to the auditorium
- Establishment of a modern, well-equipped library
- Construction of a dedicated building for the accountancy department
- Additional road projects
These initiatives are part of a comprehensive strategy to improve the educational environment and resources available to students.
Encouragement for Graduating Students
Addressing the graduating class of approximately 51,000, the governor urged them to embrace challenges with courage and resilience. He emphasized the importance of being innovative and making a positive impact on society. “Let the knowledge and values you acquired here be your driving force to be change agents,” he encouraged. He implored the graduates to take their skills and make a difference in their communities, the state, and beyond.
Leadership and Development at the Polytechnic
In his remarks, Dr. Babatunde Jolaoso, the rector of the polytechnic, highlighted the achievements of his administration during his six-month tenure. He reported fostering a stable atmosphere of peace and understanding among staff and students while pursuing infrastructural improvements. Notably, his administration secured the long-awaited approval from the National Broadcasting Commission for full transmission rights for the campus radio station, MAPOLY FM, and resolved a N76 million debt owed to a commercial bank.
However, Dr. Jolaoso also called for increased governmental support to finance accreditation exercises, complete the long-abandoned students’ hostel project, and construct additional lecture rooms and internal roads.
A Call to the Youth
Emeritus Professor Kamaldeen Balogun, Chairman of the Governing Council, expressed gratitude to Governor Abiodun for his support and leadership. During the convocation lecture, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, urged the youth considering migration to pursue legal avenues to avoid the dangers associated with illegal migration. She shared harrowing stories of individuals who suffered dire consequences due to unlawful migration attempts.
Dabiri-Erewa encouraged the polytechnic to foster collaborations with the diaspora community, leveraging these relationships to unlock new opportunities for the institution’s growth and development.
Conclusion
The initiatives announced by Governor Abiodun represent a pivotal moment for Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, signaling a renewed commitment to educational excellence and infrastructural development. As the institution embarks on this transformative journey, the hope is that it will not only enhance the learning experience for students but also contribute significantly to the broader community and economy of Ogun State.
